Celebrate Mississippi's Musicians
March is Mississippi Musicians Month, a time to celebrate the incredible talent that calls our state home. Tupelo proudly showcases its vibrant live music scene and features local talent not only in March, but all year long.
Tupelo's music scene? It's local. Meet Brittany McGee.
Brittany McGee: A Voice Rooted in Tupelo
From the soulful harmonies of church choirs to the vibrant energy of local stages, Brittany McGee's musical journey is a testament to her deep-seated passion for connecting with people through song. Raised with a strong musical foundation, thanks to her father's lifelong dedication as a minister of music, Brittany's love for singing blossomed early. She honed her skills in high school theatre, talent shows, choir, and even rocked out in two bands at Delta State University.
Country music holds a special place in her heart, though she loves to infuse her own unique twist into every performance. Inspired by artists ranging from the timeless Gaithers and Faith Hill to contemporary singer/songwriter indie pop discoveries on TikTok, Brittany's musical palette is diverse and ever-evolving. If she could share the stage with anyone, it would be Ashley McBryde, Kelly Clarkson, or Teddy Swims, artists who embody the soulful power she strives for in her own performances.
But, Brittany's heart remains firmly rooted in her community. "This is where it all started for me, in Tupelo," she says, emphasizing the importance of local support. She encourages everyone to come out to shows, share events on social media, and remember that artists are individuals pouring their hearts into their craft. "There's nothing like playing for people you know."
Brittany's advice for aspiring singers is simple: "Everybody starts somewhere." Find a mentor, seek advice, make connections, and never let anyone dim your passion. Her goal is to create unforgettable experiences for her audience. "I’ve always been big on meeting people where they are," she says, recalling a poignant moment when her music brought comfort to a grieving mother sitting in the corner of one of her shows. It's these connections that drive her.
While she dreams of larger stages, Brittany cherishes the intimacy of small venues and the ability to connect with her audience on a personal level. She recommends checking out local spots like Blue Canoe, Lone Star Schooner Bar & Grill, Amsterdam Deli, and Romie's Grocery, while supporting fellow artists like Matt Nolan, Michael Breedlove, Hannah + Karly, and so many more. This year, Brittany took the leap to pursue her music full-time, a testament to the dedication and unwavering support of her community. With a powerful voice and genuine spirit, Brittany McGee is a rising star in Tupelo's vibrant music scene.
