Lyric Theatre
Overview
This is one of 14 significant sites in Elvis' formative years in Tupelo marked with bronze plaques on the Elvis' Tupelo Driving Tour. Elvis enjoyed going to the movies, especially “westerns,” at the Lyric Theatre. Friends recall how Elvis would climb over the divider in the balcony to sit among his African-American friends. The sweetest of the legends associated with this theatre and Elvis is the rumor that he stole his fist kiss in the balcony. The Tupelo Community Theatre was founded in 1969 out of visionary citizens’ dreams for creating a local theatre group. Over 200,000 patrons have enjoyed more than 250 productions since TCT’s first production.
